IELTS Speaking Module Exam Format

Speaking Module:

There is no change in the content of IELTS Speaking test for Academic and GT IELTS. This is a face-to-face interview between the candidate and the certified examiner. Many IELTS test centers conduct this test via video calls. There is no difference between an in-person speaking test or a video call test. This mode means more flexibility as well as the availability of Speaking parts of IELTS.

This part of IELTS exam is quite interactive and based on real-life situations. You should be familiar with a wide range of accents and should be fluent in speaking. You should be able to organize your ideas coherently and justify your opinions in an appropriate language.

Let’s have a brief overview of its format:

General Structure:              

  1. This test lasts for 10 to 15 minutes, and it has 3 sections.
  2. In the first section, there is an introduction between you and a certified examiner, and then you are asked general questions about your hometown, family, friends, work, studies, and interests. It may last up to 5 minutes.
  3. In section 2, you are given a task card to talk about a particular topic. You get 1 minute to prepare and other 1-2 minutes to speak at length. Your speech is followed by 1 or 2 questions on the given task.
  4. Section 3 is the discussion part. The examiner follows up the topic given in section 2. You may face some counter questions from the examiner. You must be prepared to use good expressions and sentence structure while giving your answers.

Speaking Hacks:

  1. Practice speaking regularly, it will enhance your confidence and make you fluent.
  2. Follow your natural accent or follow any established one. Never make a mix-up.
  3. Use a wide range of vocabulary, phrases and expressions while speaking practice.
  4. Try to read a bunch of speaking questions and try answering them while preparing.
  5. Go through past papers and samples and practice them as much as you can.
